Washington County Recycling

Statewide recycling in Pennsylvania began in 1988 with the Municipal Waste Planning Recycling and Waste Reduction Act (Act 101) that requires larger municipalities to recycle. (DEP website, 2012)
Today, more than 11.6 million residents (at least 94 percent) of the state's population have access to recycling. About 79 percent have convenient access to recycling through about 1,050 curb-side pickup programs. Since Pennsylvania is largely rural, 870 drop-off programs extend recycling to the greatest number of communities. (DEP website, 2012)

In Washington County, there are eleven (11) mandated communities that must offer curbside recycling to its residents. In addition, there are two (2) communities that voluntarily offer curbside recycling to its residents.

For more information, please visit the DEP Recycling Website.

Washington County would also like to announce the opening of the county's
first recycling drop off site located in Nottingham Township, at the Nottingham Township Municipal Complex. It is a single stream site, so you can take all your recyclables (cans, glass, plastic, all paper, and cardboard) to the site and they will accept it.

UPDATE: Nottingham Township Single Stream Drop Off Center is now open to the public. Please call Nottingham Township at 724-348-5622 for more information.

Washington

County is proud to offer recycling opportunities to its residents and residents from the Southwestern Pennsylvania region, both through the above drop-off site, various collection events, and through private brokers that accept recyclables. Washington County also offers the Washington County Recycling Facilities Directory, which offers a listing of drop-off locations thoroughout the county. The above Directory file is in PDF format; there is also an Excel file available. And finally, we have listed recycling information and collection event results below.

Please check the Planning Commission Calendar of Events for upcoming recycling opportunities, as well as this website for program updates. If you have questions, please contact Jason Theakston at (724) 228-6811 or at theakstj@co.washington.pa.us.
