Washington County Recycling

Statewide recycling in Pennsylvania began in 1988 with the Municipal Waste Planning Recycling and Waste Reduction Act (Act 101) that requires larger municipalities to recycle. (DEP website, 2012)
Today, more than 11.6 million residents (at least 94 percent) of the state's population have access to recycling. About 79 percent have convenient access to recycling through about 1,050 curb-side pickup programs. Since Pennsylvania is largely rural, 870 drop-off programs extend recycling to the greatest number of communities. (DEP website, 2012)

In Washington County, there are eleven (11) mandated communities that must offer curbside recycling to its residents. In addition, there are two (2) communities that voluntarily offer curbside recycling to its residents.

For more information, please visit the DEP Recycling Website.

UPDATE: Nottingham Township Single Stream Drop Off Center is permanently closed. Please call Washington County Planning Commission at 724-228-6811 for more information.

Washington

County is proud to offer recycling opportunities to its residents and residents from the Southwestern Pennsylvania region, through various collection events, and also private brokers that accept recyclables. In this vein, Washington County has created the Washington County Recycling Facilities Directory, which offers a listing of drop-off locations throughout the county. The above Directory file is in PDF format; there is also an Excel file available. And finally, we have listed recycling information and collection event results below.

Update December 28, 2018 -

Washington County is happy to report that the 2018 totals from our Monthly Electronics Collections are in.  We are proud to report that over 203,000 pounds of material was recycled by over 2,500 participants.  That brings the totals over the three years of the program to over 862,000 POUNDS of material diverted from the conventional waste stream.  Washington County would like to thank JVS Environmental for their ongoing assistance on the program, and the Washington County Commissioners for their continued support.
